HYPERMAGNESEMIA =>2.3 mEq/L

 

Etiology:

  1. CRF
  2. Abuse of antacids and laxatives (avoid in pt with CRF)
  3. in cell lysis ( tissue necrosis, rhabdomyalisis )

S & S :

  1. CNS: DTR, paresthesias, confusion,
     
  2. CV : BP, apnea, dysrhythmias

DX : 

  1. EKG : <QT,
     
  2. < BP,
     
  3. < DTR.

Note!! These are also tests and bed side diagnoses performed when treating pt with preclampsia/eclampsia.

Treatment:

  1. Cardiac abnormalities treated with IV Ca Gluconate.
     
  2. Dialysis if CRF
