TRIPOD  FX (aka Zigomaxillary Complex Fracture)

 

This is a fx that involves three sites:

  1. zygomaticomaxillary fx
     
  2. zygomaticofrontal  fx
     
  3. zygomatic arch fx
    This fx  will also involve orbital and paranasal sinuses.

S & S:

  1. Deformity 2ry to swelling/ecchymosis
     
  2. Numbness to the area if infraorbital nerve is involved
     
  3. R/O eye globe injury
     
  4. R/O associated injuries to mandible
     

DX:

  1. See in "overview"
     
  2. To distinguish Tripod fx from LeFort II, in the Tripod it is the lateral orbital rim which is commonly  fractured as compared to medial orbital rim fracture in LeFort II.

Treatment:

  1. OMF consult (ORIF needed if displaced)
     
  2. Ophthalmology consult prn.
