TRICHOMONAS

 

  1. Foamy, yellow, malodorous discharge from cervix. Men are asymptomatic.
     
  2. DX under microscope on wet mount as motile, pear-shaped organ with flagille. Occasionally  reported on routine UA.
     
  3. Treated with Metronidazole 500 mg PO tid x 7 day or 2 gm PO x 1 dose. Alcohol must be avoided to prevent an antabuse-like effect. Since metronidazole interferes with folic acid pregnant women are treated  with Clotrimazole cream in 1st  trimester. Partner must be treated.
