CHANCROID

 

  1. Due to Haemophilus. ducreyi. Presents as painful ulcers with tender regional adenopathy. Endemic in tropics and subtropics (Africa and SE Asia). 

DX

  1. is made by swab culture (not very sensitive).  On gram stain may see a "school of fish" formation of gram – bacillus. 

Treatment

  1. is with Ceftriaxone 250 mg IM x 1 or Erythromycin 500 mg PO qid for 1 week. Partner must be also treated.
